2016年1月1日起，熔断机制正式实施。1月4日成为熔断机制实施后的首个交易日。然而，2016年首个交易日两市暴跌，沪深300指数在午后跌幅扩大至5%，触发熔断机制，个股全面暂停交易，两市将熔断15分钟；恢复后，再次持续下跌，跌幅扩大到7%，再度触发A股熔断机制，沪深两市提前休市。所以人称：证券工作好，牛市收入高，熊市下班早！

China’s stock market regulator announced last month that come the New Year it would introduce a circuit breaker–a forced pause to trading–if shares fell too precipitously. On the first trading day of the year, officials had to reach for the newly installed system, twice.
circuit breaker：熔断机制。或者可以说成circuit breaker mechanism。circuit breaker在电工学里就是断路器的意思。当电路中出现短路时，断路器会立即断开电路，保护负载的安全。
 
An index of the 300 biggest stocks listed in Shanghai and Shenzhen plunged Monday, triggering the circuit breaker and leading first to one 15-minute pause in trading and then a second halt, which closed the markets for the remainder of the day 80 minutes earlier than scheduled.

Plunged：暴跌。在形容股市时，表示 “小幅下跌”，可以用dip/edge down/slip lower/ edge down等，而“大幅下跌”则用dive/nosedive/ plunge/plummet/ tumble/sink等。 “大幅快速下跌”，则可以用crash/collapse/crumble/slump等。下跌的时候，就要注意equities bubble 股市泡沫啦~当然，股票也一定总是下跌~在上涨的时候，最常用的词语有 advance/gain/climb/ rise，如果是涨幅较大，则可以用 surge/soar/ jump，涨幅较小则是edge up。大涨的股票可以用skyrocket（一飞冲天）形容。另外还有回升rally/ pick up，提振buoy ，徘徊hover等。

The markets opened in negative territory and stayed there as a flurry of bad news arrived: a weaker-than-expected gauge of manufacturing activity and a further slide in the value of the country’s currency. Adding to the bearish mood are worries among investors about the lapse this Friday of a six-month ban on selling shares by major shareholders–those holding 5% stakes or larger in a listed company. The ban was imposed in July last year to stem a meltdown in the stock markets, and its end may lead to more selling.
in negative territory：负值。opened in negative territory可以简单地说成“股市开局不利”。 在股市里，open和close是很常用的两个词，前者是“开盘”，后者为“收盘”。 对应的“开盘价”和“收盘价”则分别为opening price和closing price。股票的当日开盘价高于前一交易日（trading day）收盘价的情况叫open high（高开），股市“低开”自然就是open low了。
 
a flurry of：一阵
bearish：熊市的，行情看跌的。看涨的就是“bullish”。
Meltdown：暴跌，也就是stock market crash的意思。
 
Markets turned critical 12 minutes into the afternoon session, as the CSI 300 Index fell 5%, prompting the 15-minute suspension. Six minutes after trading resumed, at 1:27 p.m.,the hemorrhaging continued. The CSI 300 index dived further, hitting a 7% limit and bringing the trading day to an end.
 
At the close at 1:34 p.m, the Shanghai Composite Index slumped by 6.9% at 3296.66, and the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index shed 8.2% at 2119.90.

Caught off guard by the plunge, traders speculated that the securities regulator was conducting a test of the new circuit breaker mechanism.
 
The China Securities Regulatory Commission didn’t respond to calls for comment.
